A year in letters

Dear reminiscing reader,

Back in April, I sent you my first letter.

On Jan. 1, WordPress, the site provider for this blog, calculated some interesting statistics about the year that followed. Since the numbers say something about you, and about me, I thought I’d share them.

Letters from Alaska was viewed about 11,000 times in 2011.

During that time, I sent out 92 new letters. There were 227 pictures included. That’s about 4 pictures per week.

The busiest day of the year was October 7th with 167 views. The most popular post that day was Good news from Norway.

Most of you  are from the United States. The United Kingdom & Italy are not far behind. There are also readers from Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, France, India, Spain, the Philippines, Tunisia,  Australia, and many other countries.

These were my most popular letters in 2011.:

1 Good news from Norway 20 comments October 2011

2 Book giveaway 40 comments June 2011

3 Hateful things 22 comments August 2011

4 Floating through a powerful world 14 comments July 2011

5 Warning: May contain bear hot dogs 18 comments July 2011

A special thank you to Sue Mathis, the Baers, Nathan Dunbar and Sarah Davis — you have been the most regular contributors to the comments section.  You make blogging fun!

And I want to thank all of you, regular subscribers and occasional visitors, for this past year. Without a reader, a letter is a rather useless thing.

Wishing all of you a happy New Year!

Eowyn

Good stuff, thanks for sharing! I know so little about Alaska but I feel I’ve learned much from both your book and what you tell us here. I can’t wait to visit one day!

  • Mr. Baer says:

Thank you Eowyn for taking the time to write. Your blog is on our favorites bar. It gives me the impetus to crawl out of bed on these long, dark, cold winter mornings. Truthfully, it’s the call of the wild latte getting me up, among other things. Commenting on your blog has forced me to dig in the dictionary more than once.

I disagree that this winter is all the long, dark, or cold. But even as I wander this place, I make sure to check in on the blog too.

I wish you a happy new year and hope the best for The Snow Child but I don’t have any doubt. It’s going to be a huge success. It is going to be published soon (on the 12th of January) in France and I’m looking forward to reading what the other bloggers will think of it.

    Dear Eowyn,
    Happy new year to you!
Many thanks for your insightful blog. I find it especially interesting as Alaska is so different to London. I recently watched a BBC programme ‘frozen planet’ about life in the Arctic regions and Antartica. There were some breathtaking footage of Canada and Alaska. There was also footage of an Wolverine ( an animal i had never heard of , before reading The snow child)
I know that all the readers waiting to read your novel, will not be disappointed!
    best wishes sarah

Eowyn, I look forward each day to opening my email to see if there is a Letters from Alaska. I love what you write and a lot of the time, I can identify with it, even though I am not from Alaska. I’ve lived here long enough to appreciate the way you live and the things you write about. Many of my friends from outside who want to know what it’s like to live here, I direct to your blog. I have had nothing but positive feedback from them.
